Is zero-knowledge encryption the same as end-to-end encryption?

Often, but not always. End-to-end encryption means data is encrypted from sender to recipient with no intermediary access. However, some E2EE implementations derive keys server-side, giving the provider a theoretical access path. Zero-knowledge encryption is the stronger guarantee: the provider has zero access to keys or plaintext by architecture. All ZKE is E2EE, but not all E2EE is ZKE.

Can zero-knowledge encryption be broken?

AES-256-GCM, the cipher used in ZKE implementations, is considered computationally unbreakable with current and foreseeable technology. The practical risks are endpoint compromise (malware on your device), weak passwords, or implementation bugs — not attacks on the cipher itself. Even early quantum computers at current qubit counts can't crack AES-256.

Does zero-knowledge encryption comply with GDPR?

ZKE supports GDPR compliance but doesn't automatically satisfy it. If you can't access personal data because it's client-side encrypted and you don't hold keys, you have minimal processing liability. However, you still need lawful basis for storing ciphertext and must provide erasure mechanisms. ZKE makes GDPR Article 32 (security of processing) straightforward to satisfy.

What is the difference between zero-knowledge encryption and zero-knowledge proofs?

They're unrelated despite the shared name. Zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) are a cryptographic protocol where one party proves knowledge of something without revealing it — used in blockchain and authentication. Zero-knowledge encryption refers to a service architecture where the provider has zero access to plaintext data. Different concepts, coincidental naming.

How does Ciphera Drop protect files differently from Dropbox?

Dropbox uses server-side AES-256, meaning Dropbox holds the encryption keys and can decrypt your files for features like search indexing and thumbnail generation. Ciphera Drop encrypts files in your browser with AES-256-GCM before upload. The key stays in the URL fragment — which the server never receives — or is derived from a password that never leaves your browser. Ciphera cannot decrypt your files even under a court order.
